For many families, navigating food allergies while trying to expand a child’s diet can feel overwhelming. The good news is that, with the right approach, introducing allergens can be done safely and confidently.

Why Early Introduction Matters
Recent research suggests that introducing common allergens early (rather than delaying them) may help reduce the risk of developing food allergies.
Foods like peanuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, soy, and fish are among the most common allergens, and early exposure (when appropriate) may help support tolerance.
However, every child is different, and it’s important to approach this process carefully.
When to Start Introducing Allergens
Most babies can begin trying allergenic foods around 6 months of age, once they are ready for solids.
Signs of readiness include:
- Sitting up with minimal support
- Showing interest in food
- Ability to swallow soft foods
Navigating the Unknown
It’s normal to feel anxious when introducing allergens, especially if you’re unsure how your child might react.
To help build confidence:
- Keep a food diary
- Introduce foods in a calm, controlled environment
- Trust your instincts and go at your child’s pace
How to Safely Introduce Allergens
1️⃣ Introduce One Allergen at a Time
Offer a small amount of a single allergenic food and wait 2–3 days before introducing another. This helps identify any potential reactions.
2️⃣ Start Small
Begin with a tiny portion (around ¼ teaspoon), then gradually increase if no reaction occurs.
3️⃣ Keep It Consistent
Once an allergen has been introduced safely, try to include it regularly in your child’s diet to help maintain tolerance.
4️⃣ Offer During the Day
Introduce new foods earlier in the day so you can monitor your child for any reactions.
What to Watch For
Mild to severe allergic reactions can occur. Symptoms may include:
- Rash or hives
- Swelling of the lips, face, or eyes
- Vomiting
- Coughing or wheezing
- Difficulty breathing (requires immediate medical attention)
If you notice any concerning symptoms, stop the food and seek medical advice immediately.
Allergy Awareness Week is about empowering families with knowledge. Introducing allergens doesn’t have to be stressful. With careful planning and awareness, you can help your child explore new foods safely. 💛
