With Easter just around the corner, many of us look forward to the gatherings, delicious meals and of course the tempting freshly baked hot cross buns and chocolate treats over the next few weeks.

If you’re feeling a bit anxious about how to maintain balance during this time, you’re not alone. As a dietitian, I want to remind you that celebrating and enjoying the foods you love during Easter doesn’t have to come at the expense of your health. It’s all about balance, mindfulness and moderation 😊
Here are some tips we’ve put together for you to consider this Easter long weekend 😊
Enjoy the Foods You Love Mindfully
There’s no need to deprive yourself of the treats you look forward to – just enjoy them mindfully. Instead of feeling guilty, savour the flavours of every mouthful and pair them with balanced snacks or meals. For example, try preparing a snack plate with veggie sticks and hummus alongside a few chocolate Easter eggs to help prevent overeating the chocolate.
Eat Balanced Meals
Whether you’re at home, attending a gathering or travelling over the long weekend, aim for a plate filled with colourful vegetables, a small serve of complex carbohydrates and a lean protein (like fish, chicken or beef). This will help create a satisfying meal that supports energy levels, reduces cravings and helps prevent overeating.
Be Kind to Yourself
Remember, one meal or one day of indulgence won’t undo your progress or derail your healthy habits. It’s all about the bigger picture. If you have a slice of cake or enjoy a few extra chocolates, that’s okay! What’s important is your overall approach to eating – not a single indulgence. The goal is to build a healthy relationship with food, where enjoyment and wellbeing go hand in hand.
Stay Active
Adding some movement into your week can help balance out those extra Easter treats. Whether it’s a walk with a friend, joining an Easter egg hunt with the kids or starting your day with a 15-minute home workout, staying active helps boost energy and support your health goals.
This Easter, let go of the pressure to be “perfect” and embrace a more balanced, flexible approach to eating. You’ll enjoy the time with friends and family so much more.
